Derry triathlon places filling up fast

Places in both of Derry's thrilling 2014 sprint triathlons are filling up fast since online registration opened on Friday. North West Triathlon Club's mainstay annual event, the Liam Ball Sprint Triathlon, and the second annual firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon are drawing big numbers already on Triathlon Ireland's website. Those planning to take on the challenges are urged to act quickly to secure their places in what promise to be two of the highlights of the Irish triathlon racing calender this year. Joe Doherty, Chair of NWTC, said: “Places are filling up fast so anyone planning to take part in this year's races should ensure they register online at Triathlon Ireland's website as soon as they can to avoid disappointment. “The firmus energy City of Culture Triathlon was a tremendous success last year and truly was the best triathlon on the island in 2013 despite the challenging Derry weather conditions. We now plan to build on that success for an even better City of Derry Triathlon in 2014, with 600 triathletes taking part. He added: “The Liam Ball Sprint is renowned across the island as one of the longest-running triathlons in Ireland and without fail is a sell out every year in a matter of days. Numbers are limited to 250 for this years event so people are urged to act now to book their places whether as an individual or a relay team.” Places in North West Triathlon Club's Buncrana Charity Duathlon are also now available at the Triathlon Ireland website. 2014 NWTC Races Now Open

This week sees the opening of all the NWTC races both duathlon and triathlon for the 2014 season. The Buncrana duathlon opens earlier this week and is expected to sell out in no time as this year this race is part of the Triathlon Ireland national duathlon championship. In addition this race is the NWTC nominated duathlon race for the inter club race series. The inter club race series is an idea whereby the Omagh triathlon club, 24/7 letterkenny, triangle triathlon club and the NWTC all race across multiple disciplines and distances with the top 20 from each club scoring. Liam Ball triathlon is open this Friday 7th Feb as is the now annual firmus city of derry triathlon. all races are now open on www.triathlonireland.com . what's keeping you :-)

Great to see so many out on a rather "damp" morning, just goes to show the commitment of the athletes we have taking part again this year in our winter series. As usual the going was quick but the enjoyment was still on the faces of those we caught on camera. So onward and upward to the next race 12th Jan 2014.

Race 2 of the NWTC Winter Series 2013/2014

Folks,

                                                      EVERYONE MUST SIGN ON

We are back this Sunday the 8th Dec. Sign on opens in the Marquee from 9.30am. The Adult race will start at 11am, the kids race will start @ 10.30am. The Adult race goes the normal route via the Bay Road and Bay Road park while the kids race goes in the opposite direction heading towards the peace bridge and back.

The reason we moved the start time back to 11am is because the weather forecast for this weekend again suggests frost. Please understand that we are doing this to allow more time for the sheltered areas of the course to fully defrost. We, in the interests of safety want to ensure the course is the safest it can be, given the lightning speeds ALL of you will be doing.

So sign on opens at 9.30am, Adult race starts at 11am , Kids Race starts at 10.30am.

Winter 5k Series gets underway this weekend

This Sunday will see the return of the highly popular North West Triathlon Club Winter 5k Series. With a race each month between now and February - the contest is on to see who will take the best female and male awards. The very fast waterfront course will also lend itself to runners achieving their personal bests. Thomas McCallion , of NWTC, said: "We look forward to welcoming the local running clubs and community running clubs and to establishing a great atmosphere like last year." Registration takes place at Atlantic Quay, next to the Coffee House, from 9am. Entry is £6 per race and those who complete at least three of the four races will receive a commemorative running vest. This year the NWTC event includes a kids 3k Challenge Series. Sunday's races begin at 10.30am so get your racing shoes out of the kit bag for an off-season dusting down.

Aileen wins silver in London to finish eighth in world triathlon series

North West Triathlon Club's very own Aileen Reid claimed a stunning second place in the final leg of the World Triathlon Series in London. Aileen, a former pupil of Thornhill College, described her achievement as “amazing”. The result means she finishes the International Triathlon Union world series in eighth place overall. “I was running with Jodie [Simpson] and Moffy [Emma Moffat] and I just thought, how am I staying here? “I felt good and saw I got a wee bit of a gap on Jodie so I just pushed more and more to see if I could get a medal. “I’m totally delighted with second place. It’s amazing.” Aileen, who represented Ireland at the Olympic Games in London last summer, took to social network site Twitter to thank her fans and her family moments after the race. “So many messages. So thankful. My family 4th time coming to London finally a result. So happy.” she said. Aileen finished the race only 25 seconds behind winner and now current world champion, Non Stanford.
